There are two main ways to buy Windows 8: You can download it from the Microsoft website, or you can go to a computer store to buy a boxed version. The downloadable version of Windows 8 Pro is only $39.99, which is much cheaper than previous versions of Windows. However, in January 2013, the price is expected to go up to $199.99 for Windows 8 Pro, and $119.99 for the standard Windows 8.

During the installation, a program called the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will guide you through the process. It will ask you whether you want to keep the existing files on your computer, and it will also tell you if there are any compatibility issues. If you decide not to upgrade, you can close the Upgrade Assistant without buying Windows 8.

In order for software to work, it has to be compatible with the operating system. Therefore, you may not be able to use all of your existing software if you switch to a different operating system. Before you upgrade to Windows 8, ask yourself if there is any software on your computer that you can't do without - and then do some research to find out if it is compatible.

If you are upgrading from Windows 7 or Vista, most of your apps should still work. However, if you're using an older version like Windows XP, there's a good chance some of your apps will not be compatible with Windows 8. A simple Google search will often be enough to tell if an app will be compatible in Windows 8.

Before you upgrade to Windows 8, it's important to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements. Below are the requirements that Microsoft has given:
  • 1 GHz (gigahertz) processor or faster. Your processor will either be 32 bits or 64 bits, and 64-bit processors will have stricter hardware requirements (see below).
  • 1 GB (gigabyte) RAM (32-bit), or 2 GB RAM (64-bit).
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit).
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
  • A screen resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels.

Note that these are the minimum requirements. If you use your computer for gaming or other demanding apps, you may need a faster processor, more RAM, or a more powerful graphics card.

The good news is that Windows 8 has the same requirements as Windows 7, so if you're upgrading from Windows 7, you'll probably have no problems with Windows 8. On the other hand, if you want to upgrade from Vista or XP, you should check your computer's system information to see if it meets the requirements.

Now that you've seen some of the new features that Windows 8 has to offer, you'll need to decide whether you should upgrade an existing computer, or buy a new computer or tablet that has Windows 8 pre-installed.

In this lesson, we'll talk about the different Windows 8 editions that you can buy, the hardware requirements, and how to buy Windows 8.

There are three main editions of Windows 8:
  • Windows 8: This is the standard edition, and it will run on desktops, laptops, and some tablets.
  • Windows 8 Pro: This gives you all of the features of Windows 8, as well as some extra features intended for advanced users and businesses. For example, people who need more security can use BitLocker to encrypt their files.
  • Windows RT: This is the edition that most tablets will have. It may also be used by some budget laptops and netbooks. Windows RT comes pre-installed with a version of Microsoft Office that is optimized for touchscreens.

If you have an earlier version of Windows, you can go to the Buy Windows 8 page to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99. It is also available in stores for $69.99. However, in January 2013, the price is expected to go up to $199.99 for Windows 8 Pro and $119.99 for the standard edition.

Windows 8 Tablets

If you want to use Windows 8 on a tablet, you'll need to buy a tablet that has Windows 8 pre-installed, such as the Microsoft Surface. The Surface comes in two versions: A cheaper version that runs Windows RT, and a more powerful version that runs Windows 8 Pro. Other companies are expected to release Windows 8 tablets over the next few months.

Since Windows 8 is so different, it will probably change the way you use your computer. This may take a while to get used to, but keep in mind that these changes are designed to make your computing experience easier and smoother.
For example, if you've used previous versions of Windows, you may be accustomed to launching programs by clicking on the Start button. In Windows 8, you'll use the Start screen instead. On the other hand, you'll still be able to use the Desktop view to organize your files and folders, and to open older programs.

Most people will have to use both the Start screen and the Desktop, depending on the task. You'll probably have to switch back and forth, which may be disorienting at first. However, if you mainly use your computer to browse the web, you may spend almost all of your time in the Start screen.

Should You Upgrade to Windows 8?

As you can see, Windows 8 is a big change from previous versions of Windows. It's not just a new version with new features — in many ways, it's a different operating system. If you don't like the idea of changing the way you use your computer, you may prefer to stick with your current version, or upgrade to Windows 7. But if you like the new features that you've seen so far, then you may find that Windows 8 offers an easier and more enjoyable experience. In the next lesson, we'll cover some of the information you'll need to know before you upgrade, including different editions of Windows 8 and the hardware requirements.

Simplified Desktop for increased speed: Microsoft hasn't removed the Desktop, and you can still use it to manage your files or open many of your existing programs. However, it has removed some of the transparency effects that often caused Windows 7 and Vista to run slowly. The new Desktop should run more smoothly on most computers.

No Start button: The biggest change to the Desktop is that there is no Start button. In previous versions, the Start button was a very common place to go to launch apps, access settings, or search the computer. Although these features are now accessible from the Start screen, many people may find it disorienting to use Windows without the Start button.

Improved security: Windows 8 has a built-in antivirus program called Windows Defender, which can also protect you from other types of malware such as spyware. The built-in Windows Store also helps to keep you and your computer safe by showing you what information each app will have access to. For example, some apps have access to your location, so if you're uncomfortable sharing your location you can decide not to download those apps.

Many people are starting to save their files and other information online (also known as the cloud). One way to do this is with Microsoft's SkyDrive service. Windows 8 is designed to connect seamlessly to SkyDrive, as well as other online services like Facebook and Twitter.
Sign in with Microsoft account: Instead of creating an account on your computer, you can sign in with your free Microsoft account. This will bring all of your SkyDrive files, contacts, and more into your Start screen. You can even sign in to a different computer that has Windows 8, and all of your important files will be there.

Social networking features: You can connect your Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr accounts to Windows 8, allowing you to see your friends' updates directly from your Start screen or from the built-in People app.

The first thing that you'll notice about Windows 8 is that it looks totally different from previous versions of Windows. The all-new interface includes features like the Start screen, live tiles, and hot corners.

Start screen: The main screen that you'll use is called the Start screen, and it displays all of your apps as tiles. You can personalize your Start screen by changing the color scheme, choosing a background image, and rearranging your tiles.

 Live tiles: Some apps use live tiles, which let you see information without even clicking on the app. For example, the Weather app displays the current weather on its tile, and you can click on it to see more details.

Hot corners: You'll navigate through Windows 8 by using hot corners. To use a hot corner, just hover the mouse in the corner of the screen, and it will open a toolbar or tile that you can click. For example, to switch to another open app, you can hover the mouse in the top-left corner and then click. If you're using a tablet, you'll swipe from the left or right instead of using hot corners.

Charms bar: Many of your computer's settings are now found in a toolbar called the Charms bar. You can access it by hovering in the top-right or bottom-right corner of the screen. If you're using a tablet, you can swipe from the right to open the Charms bar.

Windows 8 is the most recent operating system designed by Microsoft. It introduces a lot of new changes, so if you're thinking of upgrading from a previous version of Windows, you should carefully look at these changes to decide whether upgrading is a good idea.
There have been many different versions of Windows over the years, including Windows 7 (released in 2009) Windows Vista (2006) and Windows XP (2001). The computer is one of the most brilliant gifts of science. This device was originally developed by Charles Babbage. Most countries have developed fast due to computerization. Writing a program is essential for a computer. Speed, accuracy, reliability, and integrity are the main characteristics of a computer.
Many of the routine activities today at home and in business are done by computers. The computer has proved a friend and servant of science, technology and industry. Most offices, shops, factories and industries use computers. The Internet is a storehouse of information. The computer is a boon to all. Telecommunication and satellite imageries are computer based. Computers have made the world a global village today.

Each new generation of computers has been smaller, lighter, speedier and more powerful than the earlier ones. Now note-book sized computers like laptop are fairly common. Computers have been dominating technology since 1970s, and has now entered almost all walks of life.

The computer has proved as a friend and servant to science, technology and industry. The computer through Internet expands business opportunities. Computerization has been done in business, banking, electronic publishing, engineering, creative designing, fashion designing, etc. It is used in railways, airlines, defence service, research establishments. postal and communication departments, meteorology, medical science, stock-broking etc. In defence, they help radars, missile and rocket launching. They have opened new avenues of shopping and entertainment.

Telecommunication and satellite imagery are computer based. Computerization can play an important role in rural areas in seed research, crop disease management and software development for rural industries.
The computer also has its negative side. The rise of cyber crime, the use of chat rooms for indecent discussion, certain websites, which deal in pornographic material have been noticed. But the advantages and importance outweigh the disadvantages. Through computerization, the world has become a global village today.

KEYBOARD ကီးဘုတ္အေၾကာင္း



The keyboard is a piece of hardware that resembles a typewriter keyboard. It is one of the primary ways we communicate with the computer and enter data. There are many different types of computer such as wired, wireless, ergonomic, multimedia, and more. Although there may be differences in the location of some keys or features, keyboards are very similar and allow you to accomplish basically the same tasks. The images below show you three different types of keyboards.

Standard Keyboard
  • The main part of a computer keyboard has alpha-numeric (letter and number) keys similar to a typewriter. However, the keyboard also features keys that cause the computer to perform specific tasks.
  • The Escape key, labeled Esc, allows you to stop a function or action. For example, if your computer suddenly freezes up, you may be able to resume by pressing Esc.
  • The Function keys, along the top of the keyboard, are labeled F1, F2, up to F12. These shortcut keys allow you to quickly complete a specific task within certain programs. For example, F1 opens Help in Microsoft Office.

  • Escape Key ကီးဘုတ္မွာ ESC ဆုိျပီ အတုိဘဲ ေဖာ္ျပေပးထားမွျဖစ္ပါတယ္၊ ေဆာင္ရြက္ခ်က္မ်ား၊ လုပ္ေဆာင္ခ်က္မ်ားကုိ ရပ္တန္႕ေစရန္ အသုံးျပဳႏုိင္ပါတယ္၊ ဥပမာ၊ ၊ Freezes Up ကြန္ပ်ဴတာဟာ ရုပ္တရက္ ေမာကစ္မ်ား ရပ္သြားျခင္း၊ အျပင္မွခ်ိတ္ဆက္ထားေသာ ပစၥည္းမ်ား ဟန္းသြားျခင္း၊ အဲဒီအခါမွာ ကီးဘုတ္မွ Escape Key ကုိႏွိပ္ျပီး ေျဖရွင္းႏုိင္ပါတယ္။
  • Function Keys ကီးဘုတ္၏ အေပၚဆုံးအတန္းကုိ F1 မွ F12 ကီးမ်ားပဲ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္၊ အဲဒီ Function keys မ်ားကုိ Shortcut ျဖတ္လမ္းစနစ္ ျဖင့္ လက္ရွိအသုံးျပဳေနေသာ Program တြင္ အျမန္ေဆာင္ရြက္  ေပးႏုိင္ပါတယ္၊ ဥပမာ။ Microsoft Office အသုံးျပဳေနစဥ္ ကီးဘုတ္မွ F1 ႏွိပ္ပါ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ အကူညီကုိ ရယူႏုိင္ပါတယ္၊

  • The Print Screen, Scroll Lock and Pause/Break keys are at the far right end of the keyboard. The Print Screen key takes a "picture" of your screen that you can edit or save using a graphics program.
  • The Enter key carries out commands. For example, while on the Internet, you can type in a website address, called a URL, and press Enter to go to the site.
  • The Control (Ctrl), Alternate (Alt), and Shift keys are designed to work with other keys. For example, if you press Ctrl + S at the same time, you can save a file.
  • The Backspace key erases the character to the left of
    the cursor.

  • To the right of the regular keys is the cursor control pad. At the bottom are four arrow keys. Pressing any one of these keys moves the cursor in the direction of the arrow.

    Depending on the keyboard you are using, there are five to six keys above the arrows including:
    • The Delete key erases the character to the right the cursor.
    • The Insert key switches between the insert mode and overtype mode. The insert mode is the normal mode for word processing.
    • The Home key moves the cursor to the left or beginning of the current line.
    • End moves the cursor to the right end of the current line.
    • Page Up and Page down take you to the top or bottom of the screen.
  • The Number pad, at the far right end of the keyboard, resembles a calculator keypad. Similar to the curser keys, you can use the arrow keys on this keypad to move the cursor.

  • Home ကီး အား မိမိလက္ရွိ ရုိက္ေနေသာ စာေၾကာင္းအစသုိ႔ ေရာက္ေစရန္ အသံုးျပဳပါတယ္။
  • End ကီးအား မိမိလက္ရိွရုိက္ေနေသာ စာေၾကာင္း အဆုံးသုိ႔ သြားရန္ အသုံးျပဳပါတယ္။
  • Page Up and Page down ကုိေတာ့ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ ျမင္ကြင္း အေပၚေအာက္သြားရန္ သုံးပါတယ္။
  • Number pad ကုိ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ အတြင္း စာရင္းဇယားမ်ား အျမန္ရုိက္သြင္းရန္ သီးျခား ထည့္သြင္းထားျခင္းျဖစ္ပါတယ္၊ Character keys မ်ား၏ အေပၚတြင္ လည္း နံပါတ္ကီးမ်ားကုိ အသုံးျပဳႏုိင္ပါတယ္၊ Laptop ကြန္ပ်ဴတာတြင္ Number pad မ်ား သီးသန္႔ မပါရွိပါ၊ သီးသန္႕ ၀ယ္သုံးရင္ေတာ့ အဆင္ေျပပါတယ္။

The monitor works with a video card, located inside the computer case, to display images and text on the screen. The two main types are cathode ray tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors.

The CRT monitor is big, like a tube television, and takes up a lot of desk space; however, it is the least expensive monitor option. The LCD monitor is thin and saves energy, but costs more. Over the years you can expect to see fewer CRT monitors as LCD monitors become the standard.

Power Cord
The power cord is the link between the power outlet and the power supply unit in the computer casing. If the power cord is not plugged in, the computer will not power on. The computer case is the metal and plastic box that contains the main components of the computer. It houses the motherboard, central processing unit (CPU), the power supply, and more.

Computer cases come in different shapes and sizes. A desktop case lies flat on a desk, and the monitor usually sits on top of it. A tower case is tall and sits next to the monitor or on the floor. The front of the case usually has an on/off switch and two or more drives.

Most of the personal computers you can purchase today include tower cases, rather than desktop cases; however, some computers are being made with all of the internal components built into the monitor, which completely eliminates the tower.

All of the basic parts of a desktop computer are considered hardware. The computer case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord are considered the basic parts. These items are the things you notice right away when you look at a desktop computer.

Beyond these parts are the hardware items that are located inside the computer case and the peripherals, which are optional pieces of hardware that make the computer system more useful, or enable you to accomplish additional tasks. Let's take a look at the basic hardware components, or the things required in order to let you and the computer interact.

Other Types of Computers
You may hear someone refer to a computer as a workstation or a server, especially at work. You may wonder how these two items are different from desktop computers.
Workstations are similar to desktop computers, but are more powerful and are usually connected to a network. Servers are specialized computers that store and deliver, or “serve up,” information to other computers on a network.
There are many different types of servers such as file servers, database servers, and web servers. For example, employees at a company might store all the business documents on a file server so that they can share files and access then from any computer on the network. When you use your browser to click a link, a web server delivers the page you requested on the Internet, the biggest network in the world.

Server ကြန္ပ်ဴတာမ်ားမွာလည္း အမ်ိဳးမ်ိဳးရွိၾကပါတယ္ ။ File Servers အခ်က္အလက္မ်ား သိမ္းဆည္းေသာ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ, Database Server စာရင္းဇယားမ်ားကုိ ထိမ္းခ်ဳပ္ေသာ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ ႏွင့္ Web Servers အင္တာနက္ ၀န္ေဆာင္မႈေပးေသာ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ တုိ႔ျဖစ္ၾကပါတယ္။
File Server ကုိ ကုမၸဏီ လုပ္ငန္းမ်ားျဖစ္ေသာ ၀န္ထမ္းေရးရာအခ်က္အလက္မ်ား၊ စီးပြားေရးႏွင့္ပတ္သက္ေသာ အခ်က္အလက္မ်ားကုိ လုပ္ေဆာင္ရန္အသုံးျပဳသည္။ သုိ႔အတြက္ေၾကာင့္ ၄င္း File Server မွ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာမ်ားသည္  ဖုိင္မ်ား မွ်ေ၀ျခင္း ၊ ရယူသုံးစြဲႏုိင္ျခင္း ၄င္း network အတြင္းခ်ိပ္ဆက္ထားျခင္းျဖင့္ ရရွိႏုိ္င္ပါတယ္။
Web Server ကေတာ့ သိတဲ့အတုိင္းပါဘဲ Server မွတင္ထားေသာ Website မ်ားကုိ ၀င္ေရာက္ၾကည့္ရႈႏုိင္ရန္ စာမ်က္ႏွာမ်ားတြင္ Link သုံးျပဳႏုိင္ပါသည္။ Web Server အေနနဲ႕ကေတာ့ အင္တာေပၚမွ ေတာင္းခံလာေသာ စာမ်က္ႏွာမ်ား ျဖန္႕ေ၀ ေပးရပါတယ္၊ Web Server ရဲ႕ Network ကေတာ့ ကမၻာမွာ အတြင္က်ယ္ဆုံး လုပ္ငန္းၾကီးေပါ့၊ ေသာင္း၊သိန္း၊ သန္းခ်ီေနတဲ့ စာမ်ာႏွာၾကီးေတြ ေန႔စဥ္အသစ္ထြက္ေပၚေနတာေပါ့၊ ခုဖတ္ေနတဲ့ စာမ်က္ႏွာကလည္း Web Server ထဲ့ စာမ်က္ႏွာ တစ္ခုေပါ့။
